- From Tokyo, the Hokuriku Shinkansen reaches Toyama Station in 2 hours 4 minutes on the Kagayaki 503; flights from Haneda take 1 hour, plus the airport bus into Toyama.
- In the winter 2026–27 timetable there are 3 flights a day from Haneda and 1 from Sapporo; a direct bus meets each flight and reaches Toyama Station in about 25 minutes for ¥470.

The Shinkansen goes city center to city center. The flight from Haneda takes 1 hour, plus the bus from Toyama Airport and the trip out to Haneda.
From Sapporo, the one daily flight takes 1 hour 35 minutes, and a direct bus to Toyama Station is timed to meet it.

Toyama has its own airport, but for most trips from Tokyo the Shinkansen is the simpler way in: it arrives at Toyama Station, where the city trams start and the Toyama Chiho Railway to the mountains leaves from Dentetsu-Toyama Station. I compare both below, with the airport bus that links them.

The Shinkansen fare is JR West's e-ticket price on its e5489 booking site for a reserved seat in the normal season, for tickets bought from March 14, 2026; it is not the paper ticket fare. Flight times are from the winter 2026–27 timetable printed on the airport bus timetable.

Hokuriku Shinkansen — Tokyo → Toyama
- On the November 2026 timetable the Kagayaki 503 leaves Tokyo at 7:20, stops at Omiya and Nagano, and reaches Toyama at 9:24. It continues to Kanazawa, arriving at 9:44. Check that it runs on your travel date.
- Every seat on the Kagayaki 503 is reserved.
- A Shinkansen e-ticket from Tokyo to Toyama is ¥12,980 for a reserved seat in the normal season, or ¥12,650 non-reserved.
- The Japan Rail Pass covers all Hokuriku Shinkansen trains.
By air
ANA flies to Toyama Airport from Haneda and New Chitose. The winter 2026–27 timetable, from October 25, 2026 to March 27, 2027, as printed on the airport bus timetable:

The airport's English flight page, dated March 29, 2026, lists China Airlines from Taipei, China Eastern from Shanghai and China Southern from Dalian. Under the table it says "The flights are currently suspended" without naming which, and the winter timetable was not posted when I checked. The airport also says a free direct bus to Toyama Station runs for passengers on the Taipei flights; the page gives no dates.
Toyama Airport to Toyama Station
Airport bus — Toyama Chiho Railway
- Fare: ¥470 one way between Toyama Airport and Toyama Station.
- Direct buses meet each flight: the bus leaves about 10 minutes after the plane lands, and later if the flight is late. On weekdays in the winter timetable, valid until March 27, 2027, the direct bus at 11:15 reaches Toyama Station at 11:38, and the one at 20:50 at 21:13.
- Local buses (route 36), which stop along the way, take about 30 minutes to Toyama Station.
- To the airport: buses leave from stop 6 at Toyama Station. On weekdays until March 27, 2027, the direct bus at 6:10 reaches the airport at 6:34, before the 7:05 flight to Haneda; check ANA's check-in deadline.
From Toyama Station
- City trams: ¥240 a ride for adults (¥120 for children), in cash or with a nationwide transport IC card.
- Toyama Chiho Railway: from Dentetsu-Toyama Station, about 1 hour to Tateyama, where the cable car platform is one floor up from the train, and about 1 hour 30 minutes to Unazuki Onsen Station, a 10-minute walk from Unazuki Station on the Kurobe Gorge Railway.
- In winter: the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route, including the cable car, closes for the season after November 30, 2026.
- Coin lockers: the railway says it has lockers at Dentetsu-Toyama, Unazuki Onsen and Tateyama stations.
- Shirakawa-go: the Nohi Bus line from Takayama via Shirakawa-go also stops at Toyama Station; times and booking are in my guide to the Shirakawa-go bus.
