- From Tokyo, the Hokuriku Shinkansen takes 2 hours 24 minutes on the Kagayaki 503; from Osaka, JR West gives 2 hours 9 minutes as the fastest time, changing at Tsuruga.
- The sights are a short city bus ride from the station's Kenrokuen (East) Exit: Omicho Market 7 minutes, Higashi Chaya 8 and Kenrokuen 15.
- Shirakawa-go is a day trip by reserved bus, 1 hour 15 minutes each way, and the same line goes on to Takayama in 2 hours 15 minutes.
Come by Shinkansen, ride the city buses from the East Exit, and keep a day for Shirakawa-go.
The city buses and the loop bus leave from the Kenrokuen (East) Exit, and the Shirakawa-go and Takayama bus from the West Exit, so the station is the hub for every trip in this guide.
Kenrokuen and the castle park sit side by side, and Higashi Chaya and Omicho are each under 10 minutes from the station by bus.

Times from Ishikawa's tourism site and the operators, checked October 22–25, 2026.
Kanazawa is the castle town of Ishikawa Prefecture, on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, and it is easy without a car: the garden, the castle park, the teahouse streets and the market are all a short city bus ride from Kanazawa Station. This guide covers why to go, how to get there, how to get around by bus, the day trips and how the seasons change things.
Times, fares and opening hours below come from the operators' pages and official sites (JR East, JR West, Hokutetsu, Nohi Bus, Ishikawa Prefecture, Ishikawa's tourism site, Kanazawa City, the 21st Century Museum and the Japan Meteorological Agency), checked October 22–25, 2026.
Kanazawa is the western end of the car-free corridor in my Japanese Alps without a car guide.
Why go to Kanazawa
Kenrokuen and Kanazawa Castle Park
Kenrokuen is the garden next to Kanazawa Castle Park; the two share a bus stop, Kenrokuen-shita/Kanazawa Castle. Both are open every day.
| Kenrokuen | Kanazawa Castle Park | |
|---|---|---|
| Mar 1 – Oct 15 | 7:00–18:00 | 7:00–18:00 |
| Oct 16 – end of Feb | 8:00–17:00 | 8:00–17:00 |
| Admission | ¥320 (adults) | Free |
Last entry to Kenrokuen is 30 minutes before closing. Ishikawa Prefecture also opens Kenrokuen free in the early morning, through the Hasuike Gate and Zuijinzaka entrances only: from November 1 to the end of February, 6:00–7:45 (last entry 7:30). It starts earlier in spring and summer, at 4:00 or 5:00, so check the page for your dates.
Inside the castle park, the rebuilt Hishi Yagura, Gojikken Nagaya and Hashizume-mon Tsuzuki Yagura are open 9:00–16:30 (last entry 16:00) for ¥320. A ticket for Kenrokuen and one of these buildings costs ¥500. If you arrive in the afternoon in winter, the buildings close at 16:30 and the last entry to Kenrokuen is also 16:30.
Higashi Chaya
The teahouse district is a nationally designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings: old wooden fronts with fine latticed windows and stone-paved lanes, with cafés and shops inside. It is a 6-minute walk from the Hashiba-cho bus stop, which is 8 minutes by bus from the station. Ishikawa's tourism site says it is busy by day and calm at night, so come early or late for quieter lanes.
Nagamachi, Omicho and the 21st Century Museum
- Nagamachi samurai district: ocher earthen walls, stone-paved lanes and the Onosho canal, a 5-minute walk from the Korinbo stop. In winter the walls are wrapped in straw mats against the snow.
- Omicho Market: about 170 shops. Ishikawa's tourism site says most shops open around 9:00–17:00 and most restaurants around 11:00–17:00; some restaurants open from 7:00 and a few stay open until about 21:00. Some shops close on Wednesdays and Sundays.
- 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art: the exhibition zone is open 10:00–18:00 (to 20:00 on Fridays and Saturdays) and closed on Mondays (or the next weekday when Monday is a holiday) and over the New Year. The public zone is open 9:00–22:00. These hours apply until the planned closure on May 6, 2027. Admission is set for each exhibition, and some are free.
The museum has announced that it will close from May 6, 2027 to March 2028 (planned). Check its site before a trip after spring 2027.
Getting to Kanazawa without a car
From Tokyo: the Hokuriku Shinkansen
On the November 2026 timetable the Kagayaki 503, a morning train, leaves Tokyo at 7:20 and reaches Kanazawa at 9:44, 2 hours 24 minutes; check that it runs on your date. A reserved seat between Tokyo and Kanazawa costs ¥14,400 one way at normal-season e-ticket prices. For passes, see my guide to Hokuriku Shinkansen tickets.
From Osaka and Kyoto: the Thunderbird and a change at Tsuruga
Since the Shinkansen reached Tsuruga on March 16, 2024, the limited express Thunderbird from Osaka ends at Tsuruga, and you change there to the Hokuriku Shinkansen. JR West gives 2 hours 9 minutes from Osaka to Kanazawa as the fastest time, not the typical one.
JR West sells a HOKURIKU One-way Ticket from central Osaka to Kanazawa for ¥8,000 to visitors on a short-term stay. It is sold only through some overseas travel agencies, not in Japan.
From Takayama and Shirakawa-go: the bus
| Bus | Time | Fare to Nov 30 | From Dec 1 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shirakawa-go – Kanazawa | 1 hr 15 min | ¥2,800 | ¥2,900 |
| Takayama – Kanazawa | 2 hr 15 min | ¥4,200 | ¥4,400 |
The buses arrive at and leave from stop 4 at the West Exit of Kanazawa Station. Hokutetsu asks you to reserve every bus on this line, from one month before the travel date (Nohi Bus marks only some as reserved, so reserving is the safe choice). A Takayama – Kanazawa ticket is not valid once you get off on the way, so buy each leg if you stop in Shirakawa-go. From December 1, 2026, Nohi Bus adds direct Takayama – Kanazawa buses that do not stop at Shirakawa-go; check the stops when you book.
From Toyama and Nagoya
- Toyama: the same Kagayaki 503 runs from Toyama to Kanazawa in 19 minutes, so the two cities pair easily on a Shinkansen trip.
- Nagoya: Nohi Bus's timetable lists a highway bus from the Meitetsu Bus Center to the West Exit of Kanazawa Station for ¥5,000–¥6,000, depending on the date. I did not confirm its travel time.
Getting around Kanazawa by bus
City buses from the East Exit
The city buses and taxis leave from the Kenrokuen Exit, also called the East Exit, of Kanazawa Station. Ishikawa's tourism site gives these times on Hokutetsu buses from there:
| Sight | Bus stop | Bus | On foot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Omicho Market | Musashigatsuji/Omicho Market | 7 min | 15 min |
| Higashi Chaya | Hashiba-cho | 8 min | 25 min |
| Oyama Shrine | Minamicho/Oyama Shrine | 11 min | 25 min |
| Kenrokuen | Kenrokuen-shita/Kanazawa Castle | 15 min | 32 min |
| Kanazawa Castle Park | Kenrokuen-shita/Kanazawa Castle | 18 min | 31 min |
| Nagamachi | Korinbo | 15 min | 26 min |
| 21st Century Museum | Hirosaka/21st Century Museum | 16 min | 36 min |
The tourism site's page is dated November 25, 2024. The museum's own page gives about 10 minutes by bus from stops 3 and 8 at the East Exit. Stop names are my translations.
The loop bus and the day pass
Kanazawa Loop Bus
- From stop 7 at the East Exit. The right loop runs about every 15 minutes, 8:30–18:00; the left loop about every 20 minutes, 8:38–17:58.
- Both loops stop at Omicho Market, Hashiba-cho (Higashi Chaya), Kenrokuen-shita, Hirosaka (21st Century Museum), Korinbo and Minamicho.
Kanazawa City also sells a digital day pass on its Norimasshi Kanazawa web app. It covers the loop bus, other city buses inside a set area and Machi-nori, the public bike share, for ¥2,000 until March 31, 2027 (¥2,450 at the normal price). You show a QR code when you get on and off.
Day trips from Kanazawa
Shirakawa-go — all year
- Reserved bus from stop 4 at the West Exit, 1 hr 15 min, ¥2,800 one way (¥2,900 from Dec 1, 2026).
- On the current timetable the last bus back leaves Shirakawa-go at 17:30 and reaches Kanazawa at 18:45. Nohi Bus changes the timetable on December 1, 2026, so check the last bus for later dates.
Takayama — on to the mountains
- The same line goes on from Shirakawa-go to Takayama, 2 hr 15 min from Kanazawa, ¥4,200 (¥4,400 from Dec 1, 2026).
For onsen near the city, Yuwaku Onsen's tourism association says the regular bus leaves from stop 6 at the East Exit; it does not give the time or fare on that page. On the Noto Peninsula, JR West's release of September 16, 2026 said 11 of the 19 inns in the Wakura Onsen ryokan cooperative had reopened to guests.
Luggage in Kanazawa
The counter in Kanazawa Station, opposite the Hokuriku Shinkansen gates, delivers bags the same day: ¥700 each within Kanazawa and ¥900 elsewhere in Ishikawa. Hand them in by 15:00 for Kanazawa and the Kaga area and they arrive between 17:00 and 20:00. The counter is open 8:30–20:00.
- For the Noto area, the deadline is 12:00 and bags arrive by 18:00.
- Kanazawa Central Tourist Information Center in Minamicho keeps bags for ¥500 each; hand them in from 10:00 and collect them by 20:30.
How long to stay in Kanazawa
Every city sight in this guide is within 18 minutes of the station by bus, and Kenrokuen and the castle park are side by side, so two nights covers the garden, the castle, Higashi Chaya, Nagamachi and Omicho without rushing. Add a night if you want the Shirakawa-go day trip, or leave on the bus through Shirakawa-go to Takayama instead.
Where to stay in Kanazawa without a car
Stay near Kanazawa Station for an easy arrival and the early buses, or in Higashi Chaya, Omicho or Korinbo to walk the old town in the evening. My guide to where to stay in Kanazawa compares six areas by bus stop and minutes from the station.
Kanazawa City charges an accommodation tax per person per night: none under ¥5,000, ¥200 from ¥5,000 to under ¥20,000 and ¥500 at ¥20,000 or more, on the room price before consumption tax.
Seasons in Kanazawa
| Season | What changes |
|---|---|
| Spring | Kenrokuen and the castle park open 7:00–18:00 from March 1 |
| Summer | August averages 27.3°C, with an average daily high of 31.3°C |
| Autumn | Shorter hours from October 16; yukitsuri rope work starts November 1 |
| Winter | Snow; castle and garden light-up on set evenings in February 2027 |
Every year from November 1, the pines of Kenrokuen are tied with yukitsuri, ropes that hold the branches up under the snow, starting with the Karasaki pine; the work goes on until about mid-December, and you can see the ropes until about mid-March. Ishikawa's tourism site says the castle park and Kenrokuen are planned to be lit up on February 6–10, 13, 20 and 27, 2027, 18:00–21:00 (last entry 20:45), with free entry during the light-up. The parks close from 17:00 to 18:00 to prepare, and the light-up can be called off in bad weather or when the paths are unsafe. On October 25, 2026 it was not yet on the parks' own events list.
In the 1991–2020 normals from the Japan Meteorological Agency, January in Kanazawa averages 4.0°C, with average daily highs of 7.1°C and lows of 1.2°C, 256.0 mm of rain and snow and a normal deepest snow of 27 cm. Winter is wet more than bitterly cold, so I would pack a waterproof layer and shoes with grip; some years bring deeper snow.

How I checked this
- Read the train times on JR East's November 2026 timetable and JR West's February 3, 2026 presentation, and the bus times and fares on Hokutetsu and Nohi Bus pages.
- Read the hours and fees on Ishikawa Prefecture's Kenrokuen and Kanazawa Castle pages and the 21st Century Museum's own pages, and the city sights, bus stops and luggage services on Ishikawa's tourism site.
- Read the day pass and the accommodation tax on Kanazawa City pages, and the climate on JMA's normals.
- Matched every value to a dated source; anything I could not confirm is listed above.
