Shirakawa-go Winter Light-Up Without a Car: Reservations and Transport

The January 2027 dates, the five ways to get an entry ticket and how to get there and back without a car, from the tourist association's and Nohi Bus's own pages.

The short answer
  • The 41st light-up is held on four evenings in January 2027 (11, 17, 24 and 31), 17:30–19:30, and entry is by advance reservation only.
  • Without a car, the ways in are a reserved light-up tour bus, a travel agency tour (listed from December 2, 2026), a stay in the village won by lottery (application period: October 1–31, 2026, until 23:59 Japan time) or a taxi with a parking reservation.
  • The regular buses leave Shirakawa-go before the light-up starts, and from 15:30 a gate stops anyone without an entry ticket.
My pick

Without a car, book a light-up tour bus. The regular buses cannot bring you back.

Nohi Bus runs three tours from Takayama for ¥13,000–¥16,000; only Course B includes the observation deck.

The tourist association says new bookings for light-up buses are now very difficult, so check the five bus companies early.

  2. 2Lottery stay in the villageEmail applications: Oct 1–31, 2026 (Japan time)
  3. 3TaxiNeeds a parking reservation

The Shirakawa-go winter light-up, sometimes called the winter illumination, lights up the gassho houses of Ogimachi, the main village, on a few winter evenings, usually in January. Seeing Shirakawa-go at night takes planning: entry is by advance reservation only, so you cannot just turn up, and the regular buses leave before the lights come on. This page covers the January 2027 dates, the ways to get a ticket and how to get there and back without a car. Checked against the tourist association's and Nohi Bus's pages on October 21, 2026.

Light-up dates for winter 2027

Light-up Dates Hours
41st (2027) Jan 11 (holiday), 17, 24, 31 17:30–19:30
40th (2026, previous) Jan 12 (holiday), 18, 25, Feb 1 17:30–19:30
  • Where: Ogimachi, the main village.
  • How often: four evenings, as last time.

How entry is reserved

  • Tickets only: you need an entry ticket, booked in advance. No tickets are sold on the day, and each ticket is valid only on its date.
  • The gate: from 15:30, a gate at the entrance to Shirakawa-go stops anyone without a ticket.
  • The observation deck: to watch from the deck, you need a separate observation deck ticket. It is not sold on its own and cannot be resold or transferred.

The tourist association lists five ways to get in:

Way in Sold by Observation deck
Stay in the village (lottery) Tourist association Included
Parking reservation, own car Tourist association No
Parking reservation, taxi Tourist association No
Bus company tour Each bus company Some tours
Travel agency tour Travel agencies No

The association does not list a separate price for the entry ticket. Without a car, four of the five ways work: a bus company tour, a travel agency tour, a lottery stay or a taxi with a parking reservation.

Without a car: four ways in and a daytime alternative

Option 1: a light-up tour bus or a travel agency tour

On light-up days, there are no regular evening buses. The bus companies run special reserved tour buses instead. Five companies run them, and you book directly with each: Nohi Bus, Kaetsuno Bus, Toyama Chiho Railway, Hokutetsu and Iruka Kotsu.

  • Sales: tours for January 11 and 17 went on sale on October 13 and 19, 2026. Tours for January 24 go on sale on October 26 and for January 31 on November 2, 2026, each at 14:00 Japan time.
  • How hard it is: the association says new bookings for light-up-only buses are currently "very difficult". If you cannot get a seat, see the lottery stay (Option 2) and its application period.

Nohi Bus's tours from Takayama Nohi Bus Center:

Course Leaves Takayama In Shirakawa-go Back in Takayama Price Includes
A 15:40 16:40–19:20 20:20 ¥13,000 Open-air museum entry, zenzai (sweet red bean soup)
B 15:10 16:20–19:45 20:45 ¥16,000 Observation deck ticket
C 14:40 16:35–19:20 20:20 ¥14,000 Hot spring bath ticket
  • Price: the same for adults and elementary school children, with the round-trip bus included.
  • Booking: online only (no phone bookings), up to 6 people per booking, paid by credit card when you book.
  • The deck: only Course B goes to the observation deck.

I have not checked the other four companies' tours, including Hokutetsu's from Kanazawa. Travel agency tours will be listed on the tourist association's site from December 2, 2026 at 13:00 Japan time; the association says they do not include the observation deck.

Option 2: stay overnight in the village

The tourist association's light-up stays in the village are allocated by lottery, not first come, first served.

  1. Apply by email: the application period is October 1, 2026 at 13:00 to October 31, 2026 at 23:59 (Japan time). One application per person.
  2. Wait for the result: winners are told by email on November 10, 2026; others are not contacted.
  3. Book and pay: winners book on a dedicated page and pay by credit card.
  • Tickets: every lottery stay includes the observation deck ticket. The inn hands over the deck ticket, the entry ticket and a map on the day you check in. Infants do not receive these tickets.
  • Not included: parking and the round-trip bus from Hirase are arranged separately.
  • Getting there: with a stay, you can arrive on a regular daytime bus before the 15:30 gate and leave on a regular bus the next day.
  • Hot spring tax: ¥150 for junior high school age and up, paid in cash at the inn.
  • Second chance: rooms freed by winners who decline are offered again.

I could not confirm the room prices, and the association does not say that an ordinary booking outside the lottery comes with entry tickets.

If you are reading this after the application period: rooms freed by winners who decline are offered again, so check the tourist association's light-up stay page. Otherwise, a bus company or travel agency tour (Option 1) is the way in without a car, and a regular bus gives you a daytime visit without the lights.

Option 3: a taxi with a parking reservation

A taxi also needs a light-up parking reservation, for up to 10 people including the driver.

  • Second sale: from December 1, 2026 at 13:00, online and by credit card only, first come, first served. The first sale is sold out.
  • Price: ¥7,000 for 1 to 5 people, ¥10,000 for 6 to 10.
  • Times: cars can enter from 15:00 and must be out by 20:00.
  • Waiting: there is no taxi rank; taxis wait in Midashima parking lot.
  • No local taxis: the village's taxi company does not operate on light-up days, so you would need to hire a taxi from Takayama or Kanazawa for the round trip.
  • Limited refunds: no changes (other than the number of people) or cancellations; you get a refund only if the event is canceled for heavy snow.

Daytime alternative: the regular bus

On light-up days, the association says the last regular buses leave Shirakawa-go in the 16:00 or 17:00 hour, before the light-up starts. On those days, a regular-bus trip means a daytime visit only, without the lights. From 15:30, a gate stops anyone without a light-up ticket, so on light-up days plan to arrive well before then.

  • Book ahead: see the bus section of my Shirakawa-go guide.
  • Fewer buses: all four light-up dates fall on a Sunday or a holiday, and Takayama buses marked ◆ in the timetable do not run on weekends or holidays.

If you base yourself in Takayama or Kanazawa

  • Takayama: Nohi Bus's tours start and end at Takayama Nohi Bus Center, scheduled back by 20:45 at the latest. My Takayama guide covers the town.
  • Kanazawa: Hokutetsu is one of the five companies running light-up buses. I have not checked its departure point, times or prices, so check its own site.
  • Entry: a hotel in Takayama or Kanazawa does not come with light-up entry. You still need one of the ways in above.

Getting there in snow

SnowDelays and cancellation

Nohi Bus warns that heavy snow, traffic or a closed expressway can delay the Takayama – Shirakawa-go buses by 2 hours or more. The tourist association says the light-up may be canceled if a severe cold wave threatens major traffic disruption.

  • Refunds: given only if the organizing committee cancels the event.
  • Cars: studless winter tires are required.
  • Onward trains: if you have a train to catch after your tour, leave room for a delay of 2 hours or more.

Luggage on light-up day

  • Storage at Shirakawa-go: the paid storage service takes bags 8:00–17:00, same day only, so it closes before the light-up.
  • Lockers: the bus terminal has coin lockers, but the association does not list their hours or price.
  • On the bus: Nohi Bus says the luggage hold on its Takayama – Shirakawa-go buses is shared and may not take big bags.

Leave big bags at your hotel in Takayama or Kanazawa. If you planned to move from Kanazawa to Takayama on light-up day, it is simpler to stay two nights in one city and go on a tour from there: storage at Shirakawa-go closes at 17:00, and the bus terminal at 17:30.

The observation deck at night

  • Ticket holders only: during the light-up, only people with an observation deck ticket can watch from the deck.
  • Walking route: you can start walking up to the Ogimachi Castle Ruins observation deck until 15:45; the path closes at 16:10.
  • Shuttle bus: it runs as usual, going up 9:00–15:40 and coming down 9:10–16:10.
  • After dark: the organizers do not say how ticket holders get up to the deck after 16:10.
  • Photography: tripods are not allowed on the deck, and drones are not allowed in the village, since people live there.

What to wear and bring

  • Your ticket: it is valid only on its date.
  • Warm clothes: the light-up is outdoors after dark in January.
  • Cash: the hot spring tax for lottery stays is paid in cash.
What I could not confirm yet
  • The price of the entry ticket and the lottery stays.
  • Light-up tour prices from Kaetsuno Bus, Toyama Chiho Railway, Hokutetsu and Iruka Kotsu.
  • Travel agency tours, to be listed on December 2, 2026.
  • Whether an ordinary booking in the village includes entry tickets.
  • How and when a cancellation for snow is announced.
  • How ticket holders reach the observation deck after dark.
  • The round-trip bus from Hirase for lottery stays.
  • Taxi fares from Takayama or Kanazawa for the round trip.
  • Links to the other four bus companies' light-up pages.

I will update this page when the organizers publish these details.

Frequently asked questions

When is the Shirakawa-go winter light-up?

The 41st light-up is on January 11 (a public holiday), 17, 24 and 31, 2027, from 17:30 to 19:30, in Ogimachi. The previous one, in 2026, was also four evenings: January 12, 18 and 25 and February 1.

Do you need a reservation for the Shirakawa-go light-up?

Yes. You need an entry ticket, booked in advance; no tickets are sold on the day, and each ticket is valid only on its date. From 15:30, a gate at the entrance stops anyone without a ticket.

Can I see the light-up by public bus?

Not on the regular buses. On light-up days, the last regular buses leave Shirakawa-go in the 16:00 or 17:00 hour, before it starts. Instead, Nohi Bus, Kaetsuno Bus, Toyama Chiho Railway, Hokutetsu and Iruka Kotsu run reserved light-up tour buses; book directly with each company.

Will the light-up go ahead if it snows heavily?

The tourist association says the event may be canceled if a severe cold wave threatens major traffic disruption, and refunds are given only if the organizing committee cancels. Nohi Bus warns that snow can delay the Takayama – Shirakawa-go buses by 2 hours or more.

Can I leave luggage at Shirakawa-go in the evening?

Not reliably. The paid storage service at Shirakawa-go takes bags 8:00–17:00, same day only, and the bus terminal closes at 17:30, both before the light-up. Leave big bags at your hotel in Takayama or Kanazawa.

Keep planning
