- The JR Oito Line runs all year. In the November 2026 timetable, the 9:20 and 11:09 local trains reach Hakuba without a change every day (11:16 and 12:45), and the Azusa 5 leaves at 10:41 and arrives at 11:40.
- Last winter Alpico ran one direct bus a day from Matsumoto to Hakuba (December 13, 2025 – March 8, 2026, ¥3,500, reserved seats); no 2026–27 service had been announced on October 20, 2026.
- The other bus option is a detour: the train to Nagano, then the express bus to Hakuba (¥2,900 to Hakuba Happo on the fare table planned to run until November 30, 2026). Last winter that route had both reserved and non-reserved buses.
Take the JR Oito Line. In ski season, check for the direct bus.

The JR Oito Line joins Matsumoto and Hakuba. This guide compares the three ways to make the trip without a car: the train, the winter direct bus and the detour through Nagano. Times are from JR East's November 2026 timetables, checked October 24, 2026, and Alpico's own pages, checked October 15–20, 2026.

Option 1: JR Oito Line via Shinano-Omachi
JR Oito Line — all year
- Take a through train from Matsumoto: 9:20, 10:41 (Azusa 5) or 11:09, every day in the November 2026 timetable.
- On other trains, change on the way, usually at Shinano-Omachi.
In the November 2026 timetable, three daytime trains from Matsumoto reach Hakuba without a change:
| Leaves Matsumoto | Train | Arrives Hakuba |
|---|---|---|
| 9:20 | Local to Minami-Otari | 11:16 |
| 10:41 | Limited express Azusa 5 | 11:40 |
| 11:09 | Local to Minami-Otari | 12:45 |
- Every day: all three run daily in the November 2026 timetable. JR lists weekdays and weekends on separate pages, with the same times.
- On some days only: the rapid Resort View Furusato at 11:43 for Minami-Otari, the 13:41 limited express Hakuba (weekend timetable) and, in winter, the 13:03 Azusa 83 also run through. The Azusa 83 reaches Hakuba at 14:10, from December 19 to January 1 and from January 4 to February 28. Check the operating days.
- Other trains: they end at Shinano-Omachi, Hotaka or Ariake, so you change for Hakuba.
- Changing at Shinano-Omachi: trains toward Hakuba are sparse. On weekdays 12 leave Shinano-Omachi in that direction, two of them on some days only, with none in the 8, 9, 14, 16, 19 or 21 o'clock hours. After the 12:09 (and the 12:55 rapid and the 13:38 Azusa 83 on the days they run), the next departure is at 15:16, so check the connection before you board in Matsumoto.
- Seats on the Azusa: all standard-class seats are reserved, and JR also sells a seat-unspecified ticket for open seats.
- Fare: the JR fare and the Azusa surcharge are not listed here yet. Check them on JR East's site.
- Winter: the JR timetable pages list operating days only up to December 31, 2026, so the January – March timetable is not confirmed.
North of Shinano-Omachi the line passes Shinano-Kizaki Station near Lake Kizaki, shown in the photo at the top of this page (March).

Option 2: the direct bus (winter)
Direct bus — winter only
- Matsumoto Bus Terminal 7:10 → Hakuba Station 9:05, once a day (2025–26).
- Book a reserved seat online on highwaybus.com.
Last winter Alpico ran one direct express bus a day each way between Matsumoto and Hakuba, from December 13, 2025 to March 8, 2026.
| Stop | Toward Hakuba | Toward Matsumoto |
|---|---|---|
| Matsumoto Bus Terminal | 7:10 | 18:10 |
| Hakuba Goryu | 9:00 | 16:20 |
| Hakuba Station | 9:05 | 16:15 |
| Hakuba Happo bus terminal | 9:10 | 16:10 |
| Iwatake | 9:15 | 16:00 |
- Fare: ¥3,500 one way from Matsumoto to any of the Hakuba stops; children half price.
- Booking: seats were reserved online on highwaybus.com from two months before the travel date, and tickets were also sold at the Matsumoto Bus Terminal and Hakuba Happo bus terminal counters. Alpico does not take phone bookings.
- Extra stop: the bus also called at Hotel Buena Vista in Matsumoto at 7:00.
- Skis: carried in the luggage hold if they are in a cover (see Skis and suitcases below).
- 2026–27: on October 20, 2026 the route page said no service was running, with no notice of winter dates. Alpico's route page lists the trip as 2 hours 20 minutes, while last winter's timetable gave 1 hour 55 minutes to Hakuba Station.

Option 3: via Nagano (train and express bus)
Via Nagano — train and express bus
- Take the Shinano limited express to Nagano (56 minutes on the Shinano 3).
- Take the Alpico express bus from Nagano Station's east exit to Hakuba Station or Hakuba Happo.
- Matsumoto → Nagano: the JR limited express Shinano runs about once an hour. On weekdays (November 2026) it leaves Matsumoto at 9:09, 10:06, 11:06 and then at about :05 past each hour through the afternoon, with evening trains at 19:47, 20:48 and 21:51. The Shinano 3 takes 56 minutes (10:06 to 11:02). The fare is not listed here yet.
- Nagano → Hakuba: Alpico express bus from Nagano Station's east exit. On the timetable running until November 30, 2026, it stops at Hakuba Station and then the Hakuba Happo bus terminal; Alpico lists 1 hour 10 minutes to 2 hours 5 minutes depending on the stop. The fare is ¥2,900 to Hakuba Happo (¥3,200 to Tsugaike Kogen or Hakuba Norikura) on the spring-to-autumn fare table, planned to run until November 30, 2026.
- Booking the bus: April to November, no reservation; buy at the counter or on board. Last winter some buses were reservation-only (see Winter below).
- On board: no toilet and no power outlets.
The detour costs more time than the train, but the Nagano bus ran all year in 2025–26, and on its current timetable it stops at both Hakuba Station and the Hakuba Happo bus terminal.

Hakuba to Matsumoto (return direction)
- Through trains (weekdays, November 2026): of the 12 trains leaving Hakuba toward Shinano-Omachi, the 12:46 is the only local that runs straight through to Matsumoto. The Azusa 38 limited express also runs through: it leaves Hakuba at 13:43 and reaches Matsumoto at 14:47 (about 1 hour 4 minutes) on its way to Shinjuku.
- Other trains: most end at Shinano-Omachi, where you change. In the middle of the day there is no train between 10:35 and 12:46.
- Direct bus (2025–26): Iwatake 16:00, Hakuba Happo 16:10, Hakuba Station 16:15 and Hakuba Goryu 16:20, arriving at Matsumoto Bus Terminal at 18:10.
- Via Nagano: on the timetable running until November 30, 2026, the first bus leaves Hakuba Happo for Nagano at 6:30 every day.

Winter: reservations and snow
The direct bus had reserved seats only, and the Nagano – Hakuba route had both reservation-only and non-reserved buses. Neither 2026–27 timetable had been published on October 20, 2026.
- Nagano – Hakuba bus: from December 13, 2025 to March 31, 2026, Alpico ran two kinds of bus. Reservation-only buses stopped along the way; most non-reserved buses ran non-stop between Nagano Station and Hakuba Happo. Stops varied by bus, and some buses ran only on certain days. Reservation-only buses were booked online at least 30 minutes before the bus left its first stop.
- No rides inside the village: last winter you could not use the Nagano bus between two stops inside the Hakuba Goryu – Hakuba Cortina section (for example, from Happo to Tsugaike); Alpico pointed riders to the village shuttle.
- Direct bus: reserved seats only, if it runs.
- Snow delays: on the day you travel, check whether trains and buses are running: JR East's train status for the Shinetsu area covers the Oito and Shinonoi lines in English, and Alpico's express bus status page is in Japanese. More on snow and delays is in my Hakuba guide.

Skis and suitcases
- Alpico express buses (the direct bus and the Nagano bus): skis and snowboards go in the luggage hold if they are in a cover. Alpico charges nothing for hold luggage and sets no limit on the number or size of bags, but asks you to keep to what you need. You load and unload your own bags, and power banks must stay with you on board.
- JR trains: JR's rules for skis and large bags on the Oito Line are not covered here yet; check with JR before you travel.
Yamato's TA-Q-BIN delivery takes parcels up to 200 cm (length + width + height) and 30 kg. Rates from the Kanto area to Nagano Prefecture are in skis and suitcases in my Hakuba guide.
Coming from Kamikochi or Takayama
- From Takayama: the Nohi Bus highway bus runs to Matsumoto Bus Terminal via Hirayu Onsen. The fare is ¥4,400 and reservations are required. Nohi lists the trip as about 2 hours 20 minutes; timetabled runs take 2 hours 30 minutes to 2 hours 50 minutes.
- From Kamikochi: the Alpico bus runs to Shin-Shimashima, then the Alpico Kamikochi Line train to Matsumoto (about 30 minutes). In 2026 the Kamikochi buses run until November 15.
You can reach Hakuba the same day, usually with a change at Shinano-Omachi. For example, the 11:50 bus from Takayama reaches Matsumoto Bus Terminal at 14:23; in the November 2026 timetable the 15:24 train from Matsumoto reaches Shinano-Omachi at 16:22, and the 17:08 from there arrives in Hakuba at 17:47. Check the waits and how you will get from Hakuba Station to your lodging before you choose this over a night in Matsumoto. The day-by-day version is in my Japanese Alps itinerary without a car.
Passes
The Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto Area Tourist Pass (¥24,500 for adults, 5 days) covers JR non-reserved seats between Shinano-Omachi and Nagoya, which includes Matsumoto – Shinano-Omachi, but not Shinano-Omachi – Hakuba. For 2026, overseas sales end on November 6 and the pass can be used until November 10, so the pass does not help a winter trip. The pass covers more than this route; see the pass comparison in my Japanese Alps without a car guide.

Getting to Matsumoto from Tokyo or Osaka
The Azusa limited express from Shinjuku. The Azusa 5 leaves at 8:00 every day, reaches Matsumoto at 10:37 and continues to Hakuba (11:40).
Shinkansen to Nagoya, then the Shinano limited express. On weekdays the Shinano 3 leaves Nagoya at 8:00 and reaches Matsumoto at 10:05.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a direct bus from Matsumoto to Hakuba?
Only in winter. Last season (2025–26) Alpico ran one bus a day each way from December 13, 2025 to March 8, 2026 (¥3,500, reserved seats, booked online). On October 20, 2026 the route page said no service was running and no 2026–27 dates had been announced.
How long does the train from Matsumoto to Hakuba take?
In the November 2026 timetable, the 10:41 Azusa 5 limited express takes 59 minutes (10:41 to 11:40). The two through local trains, which run every day, take 1 hour 56 minutes (9:20 to 11:16) and 1 hour 36 minutes (11:09 to 12:45). Most other trains end before Hakuba, so you change on the way, usually at Shinano-Omachi.
Do I need to reserve the bus to Hakuba in winter?
For some buses. From December 13, 2025 to March 31, 2026 the Nagano – Hakuba route had reservation-only buses and non-reserved buses (most of the non-reserved ones ran non-stop between Nagano Station and Hakuba Happo), and the direct Matsumoto – Hakuba bus had reserved seats only. The 2026–27 rules had not been published on October 20, 2026.
Does the Alpine-Takayama-Matsumoto pass cover the Oito Line to Hakuba?
No. The pass covers JR trains only as far north as Shinano-Omachi, so Shinano-Omachi to Hakuba is outside it. The 2026 pass can be used only until November 10, 2026.
How much is the bus from Nagano to Hakuba?
¥2,900 one way to Hakuba Happo on Alpico's spring-to-autumn fare table, planned to run until November 30, 2026. The winter fare is not confirmed yet.
