Japan in Winter for Non-Skiers: Snow Sights in Central Japan by Train and Bus

Seven places in central Japan to see snow without skis, by train and bus: snow monkeys, gardens and villages lit up at night, ice sculptures, ice lanterns and a fire festival.

The short answer
  • Want snow on a date of your choosing? The snow monkeys near Nagano (9:00–16:00, November to March) and Kenrokuen's snow ropes in Kanazawa (¥320) are there through the season.
  • Planning around an event? Shirakawa-go lights up on January 11, 17, 24 and 31, 2027 (reservation only), and Matsumoto's ice sculptures are on January 22–24 (free).
  • Coming for the Kiso Valley ice lanterns or the Nozawa Onsen fire festival? Their 2027 dates were not out on October 21, 2026; below are the 2026 dates.
My pick

For a first winter trip without skis, pair the snow monkeys near Nagano with Kenrokuen in Kanazawa. Both are on the Hokuriku Shinkansen and open through the season.

The Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park opens 9:00–16:00 from November to March. From Nagano it is about 1 hr 30 min of train, bus and walking, plus the wait for the bus.

Kenrokuen's snow ropes go up each year from November 1, starting with the Karasaki pine. On October 25, 2026, no dates were posted for a 2027 winter light-up.

You do not need skis to see snow country in Japan in winter. In central Japan, wild monkeys gather in a snowy mountain valley, gardens and thatched villages are lit up after dark, and old post towns line their streets with ice lanterns. These winter destinations can all be reached by train and bus, without a car.

Dates, prices and times come from each organizer or operator, checked between October 15 and 21, 2026. For what runs and what closes in the mountains in winter, see my guide to the Japanese Alps in winter without a car.

Winter attractions without skis at a glance

Sight From Travel time Entry When
Snow monkeys Nagano About 1 hr 30 min + bus wait ¥800 (to Nov 30) Nov – Mar
Kenrokuen snow ropes Kanazawa Not checked ¥320 From Nov 1
Matsumoto ice sculptures Matsumoto Station 15 min on foot Free Jan 22–24, 2027
Shirakawa-go light-up Takayama (Nohi Bus tour) Tour bus From ¥13,000 4 nights, Jan 2027
Hida Folk Village light-up Takayama About 9 min by bus Not checked Jan 9 – Feb 28, 2027
Kiso Valley ice lanterns Nagoya Train Not listed Late Jan – mid-Feb (2026)
Nozawa fire festival Iiyama 25 min by bus Watch only Jan 13–15 (2026)
  • Snow monkeys: the time is train, bus and walk combined, not counting the wait for the bus at Yudanaka. Admission changes from December 1, 2026; the park had not published the new price on October 21.
  • Hida Folk Village: the Sarubobo bus from the Takayama Nohi Bus Center takes about 9 minutes, and Nohi Bus sells a ¥1,000 set ticket with the round trip and admission.
  • Not checked: I have not checked bus times from Kanazawa Station to Kenrokuen.
  • Shirakawa-go: ¥13,000 is Nohi Bus's plan A from Takayama. Four other bus companies run tours, and I have not checked their prices.

Putting two or three together

On the Hokuriku Shinkansen: the 7:20 Kagayaki from Tokyo reaches Nagano at 8:37 and Kanazawa at 9:44. The snow monkeys and Kenrokuen are open through the season, so this pair works on any dates from December to February: a day for the monkeys from Nagano, then on to Kanazawa for the garden.

Late January, with fixed dates: Matsumoto's ice sculptures (January 22–24, 2027) and the Shirakawa-go light-up on January 24 fall in the same week, and the Hida Folk Village in Takayama is lit from January 9 to February 28. Book the Shirakawa-go tour first, since entry that night is by reservation only.

From Shinjuku, the limited express Azusa 5 takes 2 hr 37 min to Matsumoto (8:00 to 10:37). From Nagoya, the limited express Hida takes about 2 hr 20–30 min to Takayama.

Snow monkeys from Nagano

Nagano to the Snow Monkey Park

Train to Yudanaka, bus to the Snow Monkey Park stop, then a forest path on foot.

  1. Train: Nagano Electric Railway limited express from Nagano to Yudanaka, about 38 minutes. The fare is ¥1,660, plus a flat ¥100 limited express fee (¥300 for a reserved seat).
  2. Bus: from Yudanaka Station to the Snow Monkey Park stop, about 15 minutes.
  3. Walk: about 35 minutes from the bus stop to the park.

The park's access page also lists an express bus from Nagano Station toward Shiga Kogen, about 41 minutes to the same stop, followed by the same walk. Check before you ride that the bus stops there in winter.

  • Winter hours: 9:00–16:00, November to March.
  • Admission: ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for children (elementary to high school) until November 30, 2026. A new price applies from December 1.
  • Closed road: the forest road from Shibu Onsen to the Jigokudani parking lot is closed in winter, so the walk from the bus stop is the way in.

Kenrokuen in snow, Kanazawa

Kenrokuen is a garden next to Kanazawa Castle. Each winter, ropes are hung over its pines so that the heavy, wet snow of the Sea of Japan coast does not break the branches. This is called yukitsuri, or snow ropes.

  • Snow ropes: work starts on November 1 each year with the Karasaki pine, says the garden office. On a rainy November 1, the Karasaki pine waits and smaller pines go first.
  • Hours: 8:00–17:00 from October 16 to the end of February, last entry 16:30. Admission is ¥320 for adults and ¥100 for children.
  • Early opening: from November 1 to the end of February, the garden opens free from 6:00 to 7:45.

Winter light-up: on October 25, 2026, the garden's official event page had no dates for a 2027 winter light-up. Check it before you plan an evening there.

Matsumoto ice sculpture festival

The National Treasure Matsumoto Castle Ice Sculpture Festival runs January 22–24, 2027, and is free.

  • Sites: Matsumoto Castle, Hanadokei Park, Matsumoto City Museum of Art, the square in front of Matsumoto Station, Nakamachi Kura-Chic-Kan and the Otemon Masugata site.
  • Getting there: the castle is about 15 minutes on foot from Matsumoto Station, or about 10 minutes on the Town Sneaker bus (north route).

Shirakawa-go and Takayama after dark

Shirakawa-go light-up: no ticket, no entry

From 15:30 on light-up days, a gate at the village entrance stops anyone without a ticket.

Shirakawa-go: the thatched village lights up on January 11, 17, 24 and 31, 2027, 17:30–19:30. Entry is by reservation only, and the last regular buses leave the village around 16:00–17:00, before the lights come on.

  • Bus tour: Nohi Bus runs tours from Takayama. Plan A costs ¥13,000, leaves at 15:40 and is back at 20:20. Plans B and C add the observation deck or a hot spring bath.
  • A night in the village: rooms for light-up nights are allocated by lottery. Applications close on October 31, 2026 (23:59), and results come out on November 10.
  • Taxi: a taxi also needs a reserved parking space, and the village's taxi company does not operate on light-up days.

For booking steps and the other bus companies, see Shirakawa-go winter light-up.

Hida Folk Village, Takayama: an open-air museum of old farmhouses, lit up from January 9 to February 28, 2027, 17:30–20:30, according to the village's own site. That page does not give the admission during the light-up, so check it before you go.

Snow from a ropeway: the Shinhotaka Ropeway runs all year, except in bad weather or on inspection days. The round trip costs ¥3,800. From Takayama, the Nohi Bus to the ropeway costs ¥2,200 and took 1 hr 16 min to 1 hr 45 min on the 2026 timetables (for example 7:00 to 8:16); check the winter timetable before you go. On the way, Hirayu Onsen has a public bath, open 8:00–21:00 in winter for a donation of about ¥300.

For winter in the town itself, see Takayama in winter.

Winter experiences with 2027 dates still to come

Kiso Valley ice lanterns: in 2026, towns along the Nakasendo in the Kiso Valley each held one or two evenings of ice lanterns, from January 24 at Miyanokoshi to February 15 at Okuwa. The 2027 dates were not out on October 21, 2026.

  • Narai: February 3, 2026, from 18:30, along the whole post town.
  • Magome and Tsumago: February 7 and February 14, 2026, from 17:30.
  • Kiso-Fukushima: February 6 and 7, 2026, from 18:00, from the station to the old Nakasendo.

From Nagoya, the limited express Shinano takes about 1 hr 29 min to Kiso-Fukushima, and local trains stop at Narai. For the towns and trains, see my Nakasendo Trail guide.

Nozawa Onsen fire festival: in 2026 the Dosojin Festival ran January 13–15. On the main night, January 15, it began at 19:00, with fireworks at 20:00 and the fire lit at 20:50, ending around 22:00. The 2027 dates were not out on October 21, 2026.

  • Watching: entry to the festival grounds is by ticket, issued to villagers and guests staying in the village. Other visitors can watch only.
  • Not allowed: bottles, cans, alcohol and drones.
  • Getting there: the Nozawa Onsen Liner runs from Iiyama Station in about 25 minutes, ¥600 for adults. Its timetable lists connections at Iiyama to the shinkansen for Tokyo and Kanazawa. The timetable I found covers March 30 to November 30, 2026, so check the winter one.

Snow on the way

Winter buses can run late. Nohi Bus warns that heavy snow can delay its Takayama – Shirakawa-go buses by 2 hours or more, and some runs do not operate from December 29 to January 3. Leave a margin before an evening event or a last train, and check the rail and bus operators' service information on the morning you travel.

For bus reservations, closures and luggage in the snow across the mountains, see the Japanese Alps in winter guide. For a snowy base with trains and buses, see Hakuba without a car.

What I could not confirm yet
  • The Snow Monkey Park admission from December 1, 2026

Yes. From Nagano, take the Nagano Electric Railway limited express to Yudanaka (about 38 minutes, ¥1,660 plus a ¥100 limited express fee), a bus to the Snow Monkey Park stop (about 15 minutes), then walk about 35 minutes. In winter the park opens 9:00–16:00.

When is the Matsumoto ice sculpture festival in 2027?

January 22–24, 2027, free. Sculptures stand at Matsumoto Castle, in front of Matsumoto Station and at four other sites in town. The castle is about 15 minutes on foot from the station.

Can I just turn up at the Shirakawa-go winter light-up?

No. In 2027 entry is by reservation only, and from 15:30 a gate at the village entrance stops anyone without a ticket. Without a car, the ways in are a bus tour, a night in the village or a taxi with a reserved parking space.

Can visitors join the Nozawa Onsen fire festival?

Visitors can watch. Entry to the festival grounds is by ticket, issued to villagers and to guests staying in the village. Bottles, cans, alcohol and drones are not allowed.
