Takayama in Winter Without a Car: Buses, Day Trips and Snow Days

Which buses from Takayama still run from December to March, which day trips work, what changes over New Year and how to handle snow and luggage, from official pages checked in October 2026.

The short answer
  • Takayama works as a winter base without a car: the buses to Shirakawa-go, Kanazawa, Hirayu Onsen and the Shinhotaka Ropeway all run in winter, and the ropeway is open all year.
  • Kamikochi is off the list. Its buses end on November 15, 2026 and there is no public transport there in winter.
  • Plan around two things: some buses do not run December 29 – January 3, and Nohi Bus warns that snow can delay buses by 2 hours or more.
My pick

Stay near the station and keep winter day trips to Shirakawa-go or Shinhotaka.

The highway buses and the Shirakawa-go and Shinhotaka buses leave from the Nohi Bus Center, and the old town is about 15 minutes on foot from Takayama Station.

Leave slack in the plan: snow can hold up the buses by 2 hours or more, and some departures stop for New Year.

  1. 1Shirakawa-go16 round trips daily, about 50 min each way
  2. 2Shinhotaka RopewayBus 1 hr 45 min (Apr timetable); open all year
  3. 3Hirayu OnsenBus 53–58 min, ¥1,600

Takayama does not shut down in winter, and most of its buses keep running. The old town, Takayama Jinya and the morning markets are all a walk from the station, and from the Nohi Bus Center you can still reach Shirakawa-go, Hirayu Onsen and the Shinhotaka Ropeway. What changes is Kamikochi, which has no bus in winter, and the New Year week, when some departures stop.

Times, fares and dates below come from the operators' and the tourism offices' own pages (Nohi Bus, Hokutetsu, the Shinhotaka Ropeway, the Hida Takayama tourism office and the Japan Meteorological Agency), checked October 15–21, 2026. For the town itself, see my Takayama without a car guide.

Takayama in winter at a glance

Bus from Takayama Winter Watch out
Shirakawa-go Runs; 16 round trips before Dec 1, some reserved Some off Dec 29 – Jan 3
Kanazawa Runs, reserved seats Snow delays
Hirayu Onsen / Shinhotaka Runs, fewer than Apr–Nov Winter count not confirmed
Matsumoto No winter suspension listed Check before you go
Nagoya / Shinjuku Run, reserved seats Book ahead
Kamikochi No bus Last bus Nov 15, 2026

The Matsumoto row is the one I am least sure of. On October 21, 2026, Nohi Bus's page listed six buses a day from Takayama and no winter suspension, but it did not show which departures run only on set dates. The Hirayu and Shinhotaka buses are fewer in winter because some departures run only April 1 – November 30.

Getting to Takayama in winter

To reach Takayama by train, take the limited express Hida from Nagoya. The ride from Nagoya Station takes about 2 hours 20 minutes by JR Central's figure, or about 2 hours 30 minutes by the Hida Takayama tourism office's. From Osaka or Kyoto, take the Tokaido Shinkansen to Nagoya and change there.

Bus to Takayama Time Fare
From Nagoya (Meitetsu Bus Center) about 2 hr 45 min ¥3,600 (¥3,300 online)
From Shinjuku about 5 hr 45 min ¥8,000–¥8,500 (daytime)
From Kanazawa 2 hr 15 min ¥4,200; ¥4,400 from Dec 1

The Nagoya and Shinjuku buses are reserved-seat only: bookings open one month ahead, and an online booking is canceled if you do not pay within 3 days. For Kanazawa, Hokutetsu sells its buses as reserved-seat, while Nohi Bus takes reservations only on some departures.

WinterFares and times change on December 1, 2026

Nohi Bus's fares to Shirakawa-go (¥2,800 to ¥2,900) and Kanazawa (¥4,200 to ¥4,400) go up on December 1, 2026. The timetable changes the same day: some Takayama – Shirakawa-go departures resume as reservation-only buses, and a new direct Takayama – Kanazawa bus does not stop at Shirakawa-go. Times in this guide are from the timetable before December 1.

Winter day trips by bus

All of these leave from the Nohi Bus Center in Takayama. The Hirayu Onsen and Shinhotaka Ropeway stops are on the same bus line, so you can stop at Hirayu for a bath on the way back from the ropeway.

Shirakawa-go — all year

  1. Nohi Bus runs 16 round trips a day from Takayama, and the ride takes about 50 min.
  2. Before December 1: first bus from Takayama 7:20; last bus back from Shirakawa-go 17:30, reaching Takayama at 18:35. Nohi Bus says the times from Shirakawa-go back to Takayama do not change on December 1.
Why pick itthe shortest winter day trip, and you can be back for dinner. More in my Shirakawa-go guide.
Watch outthe Gokayama Suganuma stop is served only April 1 – November 30, and heavy snow can delay buses by 2 hours or more.

If you would rather not wait at snowy bus stops, Nohi Bus runs a reserved sightseeing bus to Shirakawa-go and Gokayama Ainokura all year. It costs ¥9,000 for adults, leaves Takayama at 8:30 and comes back at 15:50, and bookings open three months ahead.

Shinhotaka Ropeway — all year

  1. Nohi Bus from Takayama, about once an hour on the current timetable and fewer in winter, ¥2,200 one way. On the April 2026 timetable, the 6:00 bus reached the ropeway at 7:45; I could not confirm the winter timetable.
  2. The ropeway is open all year: ¥3,800 return or ¥2,400 one way for adults over both ropeways.
Why pick ita snowy mountain view from Takayama without a car.
Watch outsome buses run only April 1 – November 30, and the ropeway stops in bad weather and for inspections.

Hirayu Onsen — a hot-spring half day

  1. The same Nohi Bus line, 53–58 min on the timetable I checked, ¥1,600 one way.
  2. Hirayu no Yu, a public bath, opens 8:00–21:00 in winter for a donation of about ¥300 and closes on irregular days, says the Okuhida Onsen tourism association.
Why pick ita warm bath on a cold day, about an hour from town.
Watch outNohi Bus says snow and traffic in Takayama can delay both arrivals and departures on this line.

Not possible in winter: Kamikochi

The Nohi Bus and Alpico buses to Kamikochi end on November 15, 2026, and there is no public transport there in winter. Private cars are not allowed beyond the Kama Tunnel in any season, so Kamikochi waits for spring: in 2026 the buses started on April 17.

Moving on from Takayama

Bus Time Fare Winter
To Kanazawa 2 hr 15 min (via Shirakawa-go) ¥4,400 from Dec 1 Runs
To Matsumoto (via Hirayu) 2 hr 30 min – 2 hr 50 min ¥4,400 No suspension listed
To Nagoya about 2 hr 45 min ¥3,600 Runs

From December 1, Nohi Bus adds a direct Kanazawa bus that skips Shirakawa-go. A Kanazawa ticket is not valid once you get off on the way, so if you stop in Shirakawa-go, buy each leg separately. The Matsumoto bus needs a reservation; on the Nohi Bus page some departures run only August 8–16 and December 29 – January 3. From Matsumoto, my Matsumoto to Hakuba guide covers the trains and the winter bus on to Hakuba.

New Year (December 29 – January 3) and snow delays

Two things change the plan in winter, and both are on Nohi Bus's own pages.

The first is the New Year week. On the Shirakawa-go line, departures marked ◆ do not run on weekends, public holidays, August 13–15 or December 29 – January 3; the 19:00 bus from Takayama is one of them. Buses without the mark run every day, and the last of those leaves Takayama at 17:50. The Hirayu and Shinhotaka line runs its weekend and holiday timetable from December 29 to January 3. In town, Takayama Jinya closes on December 29, December 31 and January 1.

The second is snow. Snow, traffic and expressway closures can hold up the Shirakawa-go buses by 2 hours or more, Nohi Bus warns. In the 1991–2020 normals from the Japan Meteorological Agency, January in Takayama averages −1.2°C, and the normal deepest snow is 44 cm in January and 55 cm for the year.

WinterLeave plenty of slack

If you have a train or a booked bus to catch after a day trip, take an earlier bus back to Takayama than you would in summer.

Takayama in December, January and February

December starts with the new bus fares on December 1 and ends with the New Year week above. The morning markets keep going all winter but open later. The Miyagawa Morning Market opens at 8:00 from December to March, and the Jinya-mae Morning Market at 8:00 from November to March; both close at 12:00. Takayama Jinya keeps winter hours from November to March, 8:45–16:30 (last entry 16:00).

Hida Folk Village's own site lists a winter light-up from January 9 to February 28, 2027, 17:30–20:30. That page does not give the admission during the light-up, so check it before you go. The village is about 9 minutes from the Nohi Bus Center on the Sarubobo Bus.

Luggage in the snow

Snow on the streets makes a suitcase harder to pull, so leave it near the station.

LuggageLockers at the station and the bus center

The coin lockers at Takayama Station (i-CAFE) and the Nohi Bus Center take cash only. They cost ¥400, ¥600 or ¥700 by size and hold bags for up to 3 days, counting the first day.

  • A same-day delivery service carries bags from set points such as the station and hotels to set points in the former Takayama city area. You book it ahead, and I could not find the fee on the tourism office page.
  • Sagawa Express has a luggage counter at the Hida Takayama tourist information office, and Yamato Transport has one near the station.

Where to stay in winter

Stay in the city center, within walking distance of Takayama Station. The highway buses, the day-trip buses and the lockers are all at the station or the Nohi Bus Center, so a room nearby means a short walk on icy mornings. The tourism office's accommodation search lists the city center (shigaichi) apart from outlying areas such as Okuhida Onsen, which are a bus ride away.

What I could not confirm yet
  • The times from Takayama to Shirakawa-go and Kanazawa from December 1, 2026
  • The 2026–27 winter timetable and the number of winter buses on the Hirayu and Shinhotaka line
  • Which Takayama – Matsumoto departures run only on set dates
  • The Shinhotaka Ropeway's winter hours and inspection dates
  • Admission during the Hida Folk Village light-up
  • The date the Kamikochi buses start in 2027

How I checked this

  1. Read the Nohi Bus pages for each line from Takayama, the Hokutetsu Kanazawa page and the Shinhotaka Ropeway fare page.
  2. Read the Hida Takayama tourism office pages for luggage and morning markets, and JMA for winter figures.
  3. Checked each value against a dated source and listed above what I could not confirm.

Frequently asked questions

Is Takayama worth visiting in winter without a car?

Yes, if you plan around the buses. The Shirakawa-go bus runs all year, with 16 round trips a day before December 1, the bus to Hirayu Onsen and the Shinhotaka Ropeway keeps running with fewer departures than from April to November, and the ropeway is open all year. Kamikochi is the only day trip here with no bus in winter.

Can I visit Kamikochi from Takayama in winter?

No. The Nohi Bus and Alpico Kamikochi buses end on November 15, 2026, and there is no public transport to Kamikochi in winter. The buses start again on April 17 in 2026; the 2027 date was not confirmed when I checked.

Do buses run from Takayama over New Year?

Yes, but fewer. On the Shirakawa-go line, departures marked ◆ do not run on weekends, holidays, August 13–15 or December 29 – January 3. The Hirayu and Shinhotaka buses run on the weekend and holiday timetable from December 29 to January 3.

Where can I store luggage in Takayama?

Coin lockers at Takayama Station (i-CAFE) and the Nohi Bus Center cost ¥400, ¥600 or ¥700 by size, take cash only and hold bags for up to 3 days, including the first day. Sagawa Express has a luggage counter at the Hida Takayama tourist information office.

How do I get from Takayama to Nagoya in winter?

By the limited express Hida train, about 2 hours 20 to 30 minutes, or by Nohi Bus's highway bus, about 2 hours 45 minutes. The bus has 12 departures a day from Takayama, all with reserved seats (¥3,600, or ¥3,300 online).

How much is the Shinhotaka Ropeway in winter?

The ropeway's fare page gives ¥3,800 return or ¥2,400 one way for adults over both ropeways. It is open all year but stops in bad weather and for inspections.

Keep planning
