- Matsumoto Castle is 15–20 minutes on foot from Matsumoto Station, and the Nakamachi and Nawate streets about 15 minutes. You can see the center without a car or a bus.
- The castle costs ¥1,200 for adults with a timed e-ticket or ¥1,300 at the gate. The Matsumoto City Museum of Art, with work by Kusama Yayoi in its collection, is 12 minutes from the station on foot.
- Day trips leave from the station and the bus terminal across the street: Hotaka for the Daio Wasabi Farm in 26–38 minutes, Narai on the old Nakasendo in under an hour and Kamikochi by train and bus until November 15, 2026.
Spend a day on foot in the castle town, then use the station for day trips.
The castle, the old streets and the art museum are all within about 20 minutes' walk of Matsumoto Station.
Trains to Hotaka, Narai and Hakuba, the train to Shin-Shimashima for Kamikochi and the bus to Takayama all leave from the station or the bus terminal across the street, so a room near the station works for every day trip.

Matsumoto is a castle town in Nagano Prefecture, and you can see much of it without a car. The castle, the old merchant streets and the art museum are a walk from the station, and trains and buses from the same station go out to Kamikochi, Hakuba, the old Nakasendo and the wasabi fields of Azumino.
Opening hours, fares and times below come from the official pages listed under Sources, checked October 22–25, 2026.
Matsumoto is one of the bases in my Japanese Alps without a car guide.
Things to do in Matsumoto on foot
Matsumoto Castle
The castle is 15–20 minutes on foot from the station's Oshiro (castle) exit: Matsumoto City's tourism site gives about 15 minutes and the castle's own access page about 20. The Town Sneaker North course bus stops at Matsumoto-jo/Shiyakusho-mae (松本城・市役所前) after about 10 minutes.
| Matsumoto Castle | |
|---|---|
| Hours | 8:30–17:00 (last entry 16:30) |
| Golden Week, Apr 25 – May 6, 2026 | 8:00–18:00 (last entry 17:30) |
| Jan 1–3 | 10:00–15:30 (last entry 15:00) |
| Closed | Dec 29–31 |
| Adults | ¥1,200 timed e-ticket, ¥1,300 paper ticket at the gate |
| Elementary and junior high | ¥400 |
The castle says a visit to the keep takes 45 minutes to an hour on average. At busy times such as Golden Week and Obon it limits entry, and parts of the garden are closed off so that visitors follow a set route.
Choose the ticket by how sure your plans are. The paper ticket is for the same day, with no set entry time. The e-ticket is ¥100 cheaper but comes with an entry time and cannot be canceled or changed. One more rule from the castle's page: visitors who come in kimono get into the garden and the keep free.
Nakamachi and Nawate streets

Both streets are about 15 minutes on foot from the station's Oshiro exit.
- Nakamachi: a street of merchant houses that grew along the Zenkoji road in the Edo period. Matsumoto City describes white-and-black storehouses with namako (lattice-pattern plaster) walls, built to protect the street from the great fires of the late Edo and Meiji periods. From April to December, a farmers' market opens every Saturday at 9:30; the city calls it the shortest morning market in Japan, because it sells out in about 10 minutes.
- Nawate: a long, narrow street on an old bank between the castle's south moat and the Metoba River. It became the approach to Yohashira Shrine in 1879. Its symbol is the frog, after the kajika frogs that once lived in the river.
Matsumoto City's tourism site suggests seeing the castle, Nakamachi and Nawate together.
Matsumoto City Museum of Art
The museum is 12 minutes on foot from the station, or 7 minutes on the Town Sneaker East course to Iori Reisui (伊織霊水, north of the museum). Among its collection displays is a year-round special display of work by Kusama Yayoi.

Former Kaichi School
The Former Kaichi School is about 25 minutes on foot from the station. The Town Sneaker North course stops at Kyu-Kaichi Gakko (旧開智学校), a minute from the door. In October 2026, the school's page said temporary walls had been put up inside from October 21 to prepare for an architecture art festival.

Combined tickets
The castle sells combined e-tickets. They cover the permanent displays only, and the castle part comes with an entry time.
| Combined e-ticket | Adults | Valid |
|---|---|---|
| Castle + Former Kaichi School | ¥1,600 (children ¥600) | 2 days |
| Castle + Museum of Art | ¥1,700 | Not stated |
| Castle, Kaichi School, City Museum and Museum of Art | ¥2,600 | 3 days |
The castle and the Kaichi School bought one by one come to ¥1,800 at the e-ticket prices, so the combined ticket saves ¥200.

I could not get JR fares from JR East's fare search, so the train fares are left blank.
Daio Wasabi Farm, Azumino

The farm is about 2.3 km from Hotaka Station on the JR Oito Line: about 30 minutes on foot or about 10 minutes by taxi. Entry is free.
- Hours: 8:00–17:00 from March to November, 9:00–16:00 from December to February.
- Closed: December 31, 2026 and January 27, 2027.
- Trains, for example: Matsumoto 8:27 → Hotaka 9:05, or Matsumoto 10:09 → Hotaka 10:35 (weekday timetable, November 2026). On weekdays, 27 trains a day leave Matsumoto on the Oito Line, including limited expresses and trains that do not run every day. The two above are local trains; I did not check which limited expresses stop at Hotaka.
Narai, on the old Nakasendo
Narai is a post town on the old Nakasendo road, reached by local train on the JR Chuo Line. For example, the 10:20 local from Matsumoto reaches Narai at 11:12, after a 13-minute stop at Shiojiri. Limited express Shinano trains pass Narai without stopping. For the walk over Torii Pass and the other post towns, see my Kiso Valley itinerary.
Kamikochi, until November 15, 2026
Take the Alpico Kamikochi Line train from Matsumoto to Shin-Shimashima (¥710), then the bus to Kamikochi (¥3,100). In all, it takes 1 hour 44 to 52 minutes, for ¥3,810 one way. A direct bus from Matsumoto Bus Terminal costs from ¥4,600. The buses stop after November 15, 2026, and I have not found the start date for 2027. For the timetable and the last bus back, see Matsumoto to Kamikochi.
Hakuba
Direct trains on the JR Oito Line take 59 minutes (the limited express Azusa 5) to 1 hour 56 minutes (local trains). Alpico ran a direct express bus between Matsumoto and Hakuba in winter 2025–26, but on October 24, 2026 its route page said no buses were running. See Matsumoto to Hakuba and Hakuba without a car.
Takayama
The Nohi highway bus is in the table above. For the town itself, see my Takayama guide.
How long to stay in Matsumoto
- One night: enough for the castle, Nakamachi and Nawate, and one museum.
- Two nights: add one day trip, such as the Daio Wasabi Farm or Narai.
- Three nights: add Kamikochi (until November 15) or Hakuba.
A room near the station is the easy choice for the day trips. For a longer route through Takayama and Kanazawa, see my 5- to 7-day Japanese Alps itinerary.
